Music at Ravenscliffe

Delivery of music sessions at Ravenscliffe, is predominantly undertaken by subject specialist staff. All sessions have a strong focus on the importance of practical, (as opposed to theoretical), interactive music making, as a means to maximising engagement from students of all levels.

Music at KS3 is taught through 3 ability groups, identified as ‘Formal’, ‘Semi-formal’ and ‘Emergent’ learners. Each group receiving a weekly music lesson. The schemes of work allow for progression within each pathway, whilst following a shared termly theme, tailored to meet the needs of each groups ability level.

In KS4/5 lessons are delivered on a rotational basis, with the groups being more ‘mixed ability’, whilst often catering for the more ‘musically motivated’. Sessions follow termly themes, often with a focus on preparation for events taking place within the wider school calendar. (E.g. ‘Christmas musical show’, or ‘Victoria theatre’ concert). Additionally, these sessions have a focus on preparing students for life beyond school, by building on their interests and developing their understanding, capabilities and enjoyment of music

‘Wondrous opportunities’ in music commonly involve shared ‘live’ musical experiences. These include performances by visiting musicians and artistes, e.g. ‘Live Music Now’, or ‘M&M theatre company’, but significantly also include performances by students and staff from within the schools own community. Additionally these performances may occur within or outside of the schools premises, and during or outside of regular school hours.
