Maths at Ravenscliffe

At Ravenscliffe High School Maths promotes SMSC development, enabling learners to become more self-confident, responsible and independent, within their own parameters. It also helps to give learners the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead healthy lives and to become informed, active, responsible citizens. Learners are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities and experiences across and beyond the curriculum, contributing to the best of their ability, to the life of the school and the community. This is achieved through a variety of outcomes including:

  • Be strong communicators
  • Achieve their potential
  • Be interdependent/independent
  • Be well rounded individuals
  • Be prepared for the future

Subject aims for Maths are to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that students develop conceptual understandings and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, identifying relationships and generalisations, and developing justification or proof using mathematical language
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
